This year marks the Silver Jubilee of a major milestone in Indian Television —- Privatization
Until late 1990 only DoorDarshan was the only channel in India with regional feed for different states in India. No private/transnational channel was allowed to invest in the satellite television Industry.
Come 1991, CNN(Cable News Network) and STAR(Satellite Television Asia Region) entered the foray to down-link their channels in India followed by domestic players like ZEE and Sun TV thanks to the Liberation of the economy by the Government of India in 1991.
The market exploded in 1995 when the Supreme Court of India passed the rule that government had no exclusive rights on TV airwaves by stating “The airwaves as a public good” opening the market for even smaller business houses who wanted to make fortunes in the broadcasting industry.
